PMWATCH - September 7, 2002 -- On Friday, July 22, an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) F-16 dropped a one-ton bomb on a residential area in Gaza, killing 15 Palestinians, including 9 children, four civilians, and the leader of the military wing of Hamas, Salah Shehadeh.

In a survey of 17 US papers, PMWatch has discovered the following:

  • Out of the 17 papers surveyed, 13 ran a front page headline while 4 did not run a front page headline; the 4 papers are: The Atlanta Journal Constitution, The Omaha World Herald, The Patriot News, and the San Bernandino County's Newspaper;
  • Of the 13 that did run a front page headline, 10 were above the fold and 3 below the fold
  • Of the 17 papers, only two mentioned in the headline that children were among those killed: The Los Angeles Times, and the Sandiego Union Tribune;
  • Out of the 17, 8 ran a front page picture, with 6 of those picture above the fold.
