Profiles in journalistic mediocrity

The one asset self-respecting journalists and newspapers prize the most is their professional reputation. That is why, the best way to press a reporter or a newspaper to do their job right is to noisily expose them in public whenever they do a shabby job.

Have you come across a news report that struck you as journalistically below the level? Here are some unmistakable signs of journalistic mediocrity in coverage of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict to keep an eye for:

  • Use of “retaliation”/“response” when describing Israeli actions but never using “retaliation”/“response” when describing Palestinian actions
  • Rarely using the word “occupied” when describing WB/Gaza/Jerusalem
  • Using euphemisms such as "cross-fire", "targeted killing", "policy of restraint" without quotes
  • Rarely describing Gilo as an illegal settlement; instead, it is described as a suburb/neighborhood of Jerusalem
  • Using "areas" or "territory" when refering to land where Palestinian dwell, but the more human "neighborhood" when referring to land where Israelis dwell
  • Using the word “terrorist” for Palestinians but not for Israelis -- preferring instead to use terms such as "vigilante"
  • Humanizing Israeli deaths but not Palestinian deaths
  • More photographs of Israeli civilian suffering and not as many for Palestinians
  • Using euphemisms such as "errant bullets" or "errant shells"
  • Minimizing Palestinian cooperation, and maximizing Israeli cooperation
  • Rarely mentioning expressions of regret from Palestinians, but always from Israelis
  • Rarely, if ever, mentioning Ariel Sharon’s war crimes and the legal proceedings against him in Belgium

If so, please post your complaint below and invite others to answer it. Make sure you follow the simple three guidelines to an effective report.

All submissions are first reviewed by PMWatch and approved only if deemed within the spirit of this project.
