The Media's Silence of the Lambs over the Palestinian Non-violent movement
|
|
|
We have all
read them: editorials and columns bemoaning a lack among Palestinians
of a non-violent reistence, calls from experts and talking heads on
Palestinians to find another way to resist beside the militant one,
accusations from all corners that the Palestinians lack a real
strategy, etc. etc.
Anyone who is in any way seriously familiar with the Palestinian
struggle knows full well that a long tradition of non-violent
resistance does exist, and more importantly, that a momentum
of non-violence has been steadily building since the start
of the second intifada. And yet, the media has hardly talked
about it, the so-called gurus have rarely if ever focused their
spotlight on it, instead, what we have had is a complicit silence --
a SILENCE OF THE LAMBS -- on the non-violent movement. No one talks
about it, preferring instead to do the usual safe thing: the same
bemoaning, the same wringing of the hands, the same blaming
of the victims, as if there were no alternative.
Please impress upon the media the need to highlight the growing
non-violent movement. The article below is a piece by Prof. Edward
Said that talks about this emerging new force -- a force that Ariel
Sharon and his deadly weaponry can do NOTHING against. As Prof Said
says, Mustafa Barghouti is probably much more terrifying to Ariel
Sharon than any suicide bomber.
