Palestinians, Israeli settlers clash after funeralHEBRON, West Bank (CNN) -- Israeli security forces intervened Sunday after a clash in the West Bank town of Hebron between Palestinians and Israeli settlers returning from a funeral for an Israeli soldier.
A 13-year-old Palestinian girl was killed, and 21 Palestinians and 15 Israeli policemen were wounded, Palestinian and Israeli sources said. An Israeli police spokesman said that the settlers erupted during and after the funeral, damaging several police cars, and that four settlers were arrested for interrogation. Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat said the Palestinian teenager who died was shot in the head. Another person was shot, one person was stabbed and the rest were beaten, according to the Palestine Red Crescent. All the wounds were described as light to moderate. The Israeli sources confirmed that shooting and beatings took place, and said the Palestinians had thrown rocks and stones at the funeral procession. The Israeli police spokesman said the Israeli policemen who were wounded were trying to intervene between the Palestinians and the settlers. The Israelis said that army personnel also intervened, and that they had treated two wounded Palestinians. Erakat said that the Israelis did not do enough to stop the settlers. Erakat, about 50 miles from Hebron in Jericho, said he holds the Israeli government responsible for the casualties. The funeral was for a soldier who was among four settlers shot and killed Friday in a roadside ambush by Palestinian gunmen, Palestinian sources said. Israel Defense Forces identified him Sunday as Staff Sgt. Eliezer Leibovitch. |
